The Starship Enterprise; credit: Madelaine Ramey

When I was a child, I used to watch Star Trek regularly with my brothers. How can I ever forget the opening lyrics to the show:

Space, the final frontier
These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise
Its five-year mission
To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life
And new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before

The theme of space travel and exploration was a dominant theme in the TV series. However, there were other more important themes in the show, especially to an impressionable child who was full of hope for the…

Lady Justice

How dare Trump speak of Law and Order? Trump has nothing to tell the people about law and order, as he clearly know nothing and cares nothing about it. In fact, the most heinous U.S. crimes of the century have been committed by those in the highest positions of power. Two of them are the unconstitutional, Supreme Court, Citizens United ruling and similar rulings which handed our formerly much more free, fair, and democratic elections to the highest bidders: the billionaire oligarchs; and the unconstitutional permissions granted by the U.S. Congress and executive branch to the same billionaire oligarchs to…

We as a society put in place protections for those who are vulnerable to scams run by scam artists who want to steal people’s money. We used to have in place protections against those who are vulnerable to the constant consumption of untruthful and low-quality news and information (DDOPE: distraction, distortion, omission, promotion, and erasure). We used to have in place protections against bad actors who sought to corrupt and steal our democratic elections. Aren’t the news and information people get and the elections people vote in just as important and vital — and sacred — as their money? How…

Our two apparent ‘choices’ for president in 2020: namely, Donald Trump and Joseph Biden. The first exudes greed, corruption, moral degeneracy, ignorance to the point of vulgarity, sexism, and racism; yet still appeals to many because he acts like he cares about the people and says things that imply that he cares. Biden embraces all of the above negative qualities except for the ignorance, but is more secretive and dangerous because he appears — falsely — to be more on the side of the people and more trustworthy. For many, he gives a convincing show, and the mass media back…

I am always leery of extremist stances. Not that I’m always for the middle-of-the-road stances. It would be simplistic and irrational to always opt for the middle-of-the-road approach just because it’s in the middle. Extremist stances can also be simplistic and irrational. Take people who are currently condemning capitalism. That’s overly simplistic and irrational. It’s not capitalism that is evil; it’s unfettered capitalism. Even the most brilliant and hardworking capitalists are obligated, like all working people, to abide by the law. Further, some must be reminded often that they are but a part of a greater society and must work…

Frederick Douglass

To all of the Americans who are bashing the founders of this country for not turning the U.S. completely upside down: in this long speech — toward the middle of it — Frederick Douglass HEAPS PRAISE ON THE FOUNDERS OF THIS COUNTRY. Specifically, he praises them for their great sacrifices and courage in throwing off the chains of tyranny still being forged and put on the colonials by the British, ultra-wealthy elites of the day – the aristocrats and their bootlickers — and speaks to the…

Mass Protest at U.S. Congress

In a nightmarish, Clockwork Orange kind of world in which the key players know no limits to violating the standards of human decency and morality, the modern-day ultra-rich — the billionaires — have cleverly created venues located in the Caribbean and remote parts of Great Britain where they can hide and launder their ill-gotten and greed-gotten gains — as pirates of yore once buried their plundered treasure on remote, uninhabited islands — often in the Caribbean. This is the sole function of secrecy jurisdictions, or ‘tax havens’: to hide and facilitate the laundering of the ultra-rich’s otherwise taxable and ill-gotten…

“Secrecy jurisdictions,” the subject of an important, new documentary, The Spider’s Web: Britain’s Second Empire, are geographical zones where the laws allow the ultra-rich to deposit their ill-gotten or “excess” gains in secret bank accounts, and all information about the accounts is kept … secret. Whereas until recently Switzerland was the go-to country for this underhanded purpose, the current secrecy jurisdictions are located mostly in the Caribbean with a few in Great Britain — and the “secretive” financial institutions are owned mostly by investors in Great Britain and the United States.

These jurisdictions are a great evil in the world…

Signing of the Declaration of Independence

The founders of the United States had a deep understanding of the dangers and abuses of rule by an aristocracy. It was so clear to them that they decided to put everything they had on the line to fight a long and bloody war to overthrow the British colonizers. They also understood how important it would be to put in place the means to prevent any new aristocracy from ever seizing power again. They wrote volumes on that subject during that pivotal era including countless, wisely thought out and debated safeguards against such an event with which they armed our…

No matter what the corrupt, favor-seeking, Ecuadorean government does to disrespect and violate the human rights of its former guest and asylum recipient, Julian Assange is a hero who should be lauded the world over for his tireless work and courageous journalistic exposés of war crimes and corruption. Let’s review the work of the most famous (or seen as infamous by some) whistleblowers of the past few years.

What was Edward Snowden’s “traitorous crime”? What did he reveal to us: that our own governmental intelligence agencies, which were established by and are funded by the people to protect us from…
